This is by far my favorite John Connolly’s book. As opposed to many a hack who can tell a story reasonably well, but whose writing leaves much to be desired, Connolly has true mastery over the language. His prose is well honed, and at times almost lyrical.
As is his custom, Connolly adds touches of the supernatural to his thrillers to very fine effect. This is an excellent page turner of a book. A woman escapes with her daughter from the clutches of a cruel, abusive, criminal husband. When the husband decides to follow, it sets off a chain of deadly event. The characters are richly drawn and even the bad guys are a pleasure to spend time with.
This is the sort of novel that although a thriller at heart, can be considered almost literary. It is an enjoyable trip you won’t soon forget.
